Breakfast and Dairy: A Smart Start for a Healthy, Balanced Diet
By Ellie Hadjilucas, Public Health & Sports Nutritionist

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day — and for good reason. After a night of fasting, breakfast replenishes energy stores, kick-starts metabolism, and supports concentration and performance throughout the morning. When paired with dairy products, it becomes a powerhouse of nutrients that helps build a balanced diet.

1. Why breakfast matters
Skipping breakfast has been linked with poorer diet quality and lower intake of key nutrients like calcium, fibre, and vitamins. A nutritious breakfast helps regulate appetite, improve glucose control, and set a positive tone for healthy eating throughout the day.
2. Dairy: a nutrient-rich foundation
Milk, yoghurt, and cheese are natural sources of high-quality protein, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, and vitamins B2 and B12. These nutrients support bone health, muscle maintenance, and energy metabolism — all important for both children and adults.
Including dairy at breakfast ensures an early intake of calcium and protein, two nutrients many people fail to meet daily. Whether it’s a glass of milk with whole-grain cereal, yoghurt with fruit and oats, or cheese on whole-grain toast, dairy brings both nutrition and versatility to the morning table
3. How to build a balanced breakfast
A balanced breakfast includes three key elements:
•    A source of carbohydrates for energy (e.g., oats, whole-grain bread, fruit)
•    A source of protein, often from dairy (e.g., milk, yogurt, cheese, halloumi)
•    Healthy fats and fibre to promote satiety (e.g., nuts, seeds, avocado)
Together, these components support sustained energy levels, mental focus, and reduced snacking later in the day.

4. Practical ideas for dairy-based breakfasts
•    Straggato yoghurt topped with berries, oats, and honey
•    Whole-grain toast with cottage cheese and sliced tomato or avocado
•    Smoothie with milk, banana, spinach, and peanut butter
•    Overnight oats with yoghurt and fruit  or chocolate milk instead of yoghurt for a chocolaty taste.
•    A traditional Mediterranean-style breakfast with cheese, whole-grain bread, and olive oil

In summary
Dairy products are an excellent fit for breakfast — offering convenience, versatility, and essential nutrients. Starting the day with a dairy-inclusive meal helps support bone health, muscle recovery, and overall wellbeing as part of a balanced diet.
